Medical, Social and Driving History

Not only is the patient's vision evaluated for bioptic driving, but also a detailed medical, social and driving history is needed. Some patients who have a history of seizures, cognitive or memory impairments may not be candidated for bioptic driving. Additionally looking at the medications a patient is taking is another crucial aspect. Medications that may make a person drowsy may preclude a patient from becoming a bioptic driver. Patients who have certain medical conditions and/or take medications may need to be referred to their physican to get their opinion on proceeding with bioptic driving. Additionally, we must be concerned about any physical limitations to bioptic driving like the inability to move their head and neck for proper spotting through the telescope.

Also a thorough driving history is needed. Click below to see a PDF sample of an extended driving history form.
